There's no doubt that the Camaro has had a tremendous impact on the auto industry since its debut in 1966. Though we know where the Camaro has been, it's a bit harder to see where it's going. The latest generation has offered some of the best specs of any Camaro yet, and stands as the quintessential pony car offered by Chevy. It, along with the Mustang and the Challenger, are attempting to pave the way for the next generations of the muscle car. That being said, a lot is happening within the industry that interferes with any kind of certainty for the brand.
The 2020s are seeing a massive increase in electric power and fuel efficiency. Much like the 1970s, it seems we're in for another decade of automotive companies trying to keep up with new technology and regulations. With that being said, what's in store for our beloved muscle cars of old? Are we going to see the same performance cuts that we saw during the oil crisis? There are a couple of likely possibilities for the Camaro's future:
1. The Electric Camaro
Simply put, the electric performance car scene is already shining in a lot of ways. Take the Mustang Mach E; though now resembles more an SUV than a muscle car—the Mach E is capable of otherworldly performance, thanks to its electric engine. Base models will boast 480 horsepower, with 600 lb-ft of torque. This outshines the 2020 GT model in both categories. An electric Camaro could take a similar path, though we hope it maintains its sleek, sporty design.
2. Full-On SUV
This may be a future many Camaro connoisseurs fear—the four-door Camaro. Though it will likely still feature the cutting-edge electric engine mentioned above, there is also a chance the Camaro will take an identical path to its main competitor. Meaning, of course, that we may be marching towards an era where the sports car is a rare sight.
3. Generation 7
With all of this talk about EV's and SUV's, it's important to also consider that none of this is set in stone. It's entirely possible that Chevy make one more generation of a gas guzzling Camaro, which would still be the most efficient and powerful Camaro yet. Camaro fans still love the car to this day, though there has been a healthy amount of critique for the most recent Camaro generation. If Chevy can come back with a car that irons out all of its kinks, we're sure to have at least one more generation of true Camaro glory.
Whatever the case, we'll be here for any and all of your Camaro needs.
